Great post as always Will!
re: Auto Follow: I agree. I have personally approved every one of my 4500+ followers... and some say I am nuts. I do it mainly to get to know who it is that followed me, and to also make sure I do not follow accounts that are blatant auto follow accounts just trying to fake their numbers. It is time consuming, but if you do it daily, it only takes a little bit of time.
re: Auto Tweet: I agree with you here, for the most part. There are times when I can see auto tweeting as an OK idea, if and only IF it is used sparingly. The key is, if you are going to auto tweet, you better be around to be able to react/engage to someone who RT's or replies to you. I have heard it said that Auto Tweeting is like sending a mannequin that looks like you to give a presentation. Proceed with caution!
re: Outsourcing: I am with you here... I am torn too. I am starting to like the idea of outsourcing IF you are working with a firm that understands how to run with it, and make it work. Someone who will become that brand ambassador for that company and kick butt doing it. Some smaller businesses do not have the time, or resources to get the job done right, so they "Try" Twitter or Facebook with little to no success and give up. Better to do it, with a reputable outsourced company, than not do it at all. But again, proceed with caution!
re Follower Counts: 100% Spot on my friend! The real number you need to concern yourself with is interactions... how many people @ reply you, mention you, or RT you. Follow counts mean squat! As Captain Picard says oh so well... ENGAGE!
Welcome to the party people... put your business cards away, have a drink, and get to know everyone! And enjoy Social Media!
Again great post Will!
